Common Types Of Power Cables

1. Aluminum-Core Power Cables

Aluminum-core power cables primarily consist of an aluminum conductor, an insulation layer, and a sheath. Compared to copper-core cables, aluminum-core cables are lighter; however, since aluminum's electrical conductivity is slightly lower than that of copper, aluminum-core cables typically require a larger cross-sectional area to achieve the same transmission capacity as copper cables of the same specification. They are widely used in low- and medium-voltage power systems and are particularly suitable for long-distance transmission.

2. Copper-Core Power Cables

Copper-core power cables utilize a copper conductor as the core. Because copper has superior electrical conductivity compared to aluminum, these cables experience lower transmission losses and are ideal for power facilities requiring high stability and safety. Copper-core cables are widely used in high-voltage power transmission, power distribution networks, and specialized environments-particularly in locations where cable performance requirements are stringent.

3. Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) Power Cables

XLPE power cables are manufactured using a cross-linking process that transforms polyethylene material into an insulation material resistant to high temperatures and corrosion; these cables offer excellent dielectric strength and resistance to mechanical damage. XLPE cables are commonly used for high-voltage power transmission and underground power lines, offering superior insulation properties, a long service life, and the ability to withstand complex environmental conditions.

4. Plastic-Insulated Power Cables

Plastic-insulated power cables use materials such as polyethylene (PE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for their insulation layers. Their primary advantage is lower cost, making them suitable for low-voltage power transmission. These cables are typically used in applications such as urban power distribution networks and residential electrical systems.
